Hello. My name is Dr. Lisa Tokach. I am a veterinarian at Abilene Animal Hospital in Abilene. I will try to address some of your questions.

1. I grew up in Minnesota and was around animals my whole life. I thought becoming a veterinarian would be a great way to make a career out of something I love.
2. To become a veterinarian you need to study hard and do well in school, especially math and science. After high school you would attend college in a pre-veterinary curriculum (heavy on math and science). In 3-4 years when you have completed your prerequisite classes, you apply to a veterinary college. I went to University of Minnesota, may people from Kansas attend at KSU. If accepted, you will take 4 years of veterinary school courses to become a veterinarian.
3. Veterinarians uses math in their jobs everyday because we have to calculate dosages for medication and anesthesia. We have to figure out withdrawal times on medications for food animals so the food is safe to eat. We use fractions to divide doses for our smallest of patients. Being good at math is very important in our job!

How do you use fractions or percents in your career?

This is Dr. Tokach again. Here are some examples of how we use math every day as veterinarians. See if you can solve the problems.
1. Fractions: A particular medication we use comes in a 500mg tablet. That is too much for a small dog. How many mg would be in 1/4 of a tablet?
2. Decimals: If I dose an animal with 100mg per pound, but the medicine comes in 1gram per dose, how many pounds of animal will 1gram treat? (Hint there are 1000milligrams in 1gram)
3. Percentage: One anesthetic we use comes in 100mg/ml for Large Animals and 20mg/ml for Small Animals. If you run out of Large Animal, you can use the Small Animal, but you have to remember that it is only what percentage potency of the Large Animal?

Good luck!
